  37. ANNOUNCING THE RELEASE OF THE MISCKIT VERSION 1.2.6=20

  39. Update to Kit of Free Objective-C Objects Is Now Available
  40.  
  41. PROVO, UT, Jun 20, 1994 -- A new maintenance release
  42. of the MiscKit has just been publically released.  It
  43. countains many new objects and fixes all of the problems
  44. reported since the previous release.  The MiscKit may be
  45. obtained via ftp to any of the following sites:

  54. The byu site always has the most recent official MiscKit
  55. distribution available in /pub/next/misckit and older versions
  56. are archived in /pub/next/misckit/old.  Please note the change
  57. =66rom ftp.byu.edu to ftp.et.byu.edu!  (The old name will soon
  58. point to an entirely different machine.)

  60. The MiscKit is an easy to install kit consisting of Objective-C
  61. objects, Interface Builder palettes, bundles, and other useful
  62. programming resources.  All the resources in the MiscKit have been
  63. donated by various Internet personalities for the benefit of other
  64. NEXTSTEP programmers.
  65.  
  66. Objects include data structures (string, tree, stack, queue,
  67. priority queue, linked list), interface widgets (find panel,
  68. textfield, button and slider subclasses, clock and calendar views,
  69. icon wells, progress pie/bar), macros, other useful objects (lock
  70. file, log file, time, stopwatch, serial port, colors, subprocess,
  71. remote subprocess), frameworks for building complex interfaces
  72. (MiscSwapKit, MiscInspectorKit, InfoMenuKit) and even some
  73. useful example applications...plus much more!

  75. To make the MiscKit more attractive to developers, use of the
  76. MiscKit resources is absolutely free of charge, no matter how
  77. the resources are used.  Redistribution of the MiscKit is also
  78. encouraged.  Many developers are reluctant to use objects which
  79. are under the GNU "Copyleft".  As a result, the MiscKit has its
  80. own license, which allows developers to reuse the code freely,
  81. even in commercial projects.  Everything possible has been done
  82. to encourage the use of the MiscKit to speed development efforts.

  84. Any developer who has generally useful objects, palettes, or
  85. other programming resources and would like to donate them to the
  86. MiscKit effort is welcome to do so.  Contact Don_Yacktman@byu.edu
  87. for information on how to prepare a MiscKit submission.  By
  88. making a submission to the MiscKit, a developer can avoid the
  89. hassles of packaging up a formal distribution of their resources
  90. and in turn help add to a growing centralized pool of useful
  91. resources.

  93. Also available are several MiscKit-based mailing lists.  The first
  94. list is for those who are interested in participating in the
  95. development of the MiscKit.  Anyone who is interested in following
  96. the discussion should send mail to misckit-request@byu.edu to be
  97. placed on the list.  Send mail to misckit@byu.edu to post messages
  98. to this list.  The second MiscKit mailing list is for distributing
  99. announcements of new MiscKit releases.  Anyone who would like to
  100. receive e-mail notification of new MiscKit releases should send
  101. mail to the MiscKit administrator, Don_Yacktman@byu.edu, and
  102. request to be placed on the MiscKit release list.  Anyone on the
  103. development list already receives notification of new releases
  104. and should therefore not ask to be added to the release list.  Two
  105. other lists are mentioned in the MiscKit's top level README.rtf file.

  107. The MiscKit has evolved from the DAYMiscKit and several objects
  108. released over the past few years by Don Yacktman and other USENET
  109. personalities.

  113. Don Yacktman is a student at Brigham Young University, working
  114. towards a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  115. He acts as the MiscKit administrator in his spare time between
  116. class and various NEXTSTEP consulting projects.
